FOSTERING INNOVATION AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Every day, FIU researchers are committed to transforming their ideas into transformative solutions. Its culture of innovation is yielding remarkable results: FIU is now ranked 15th among U.S. public universities and 33rd in the world for patent production (National Academy of Inventors and Intellectual Property Owners Association). We did that in less than three years, from five patents awarded in 2015 to 65 in 2018.
To help get technologies to market, StartUP FIU's university-wide initiatives serve as a platform to foster innovation and entrepreneurship, including the development of breakthrough technologies, the pursuit of enterprises that close social or environmental gaps, and the creation of companies.
- Ratcliffe Art + Design Incubator is an initiative in the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) aimed to promote and cultivate social entrepreneurship and innovation among upcoming FIU artists and designers. The incubator’s one-year residency provides Ratcliffe fellows with essential tools to turn their ideas into profitable businesses.
- Focused on improving lives, many of the patents secured by FIU researchers are in emerging technology fields. Patents awarded to FIU researchers included a device for assisting visually impaired patients, an instantly rechargeable battery device, rapid Zika detection using a nano-enabled electrochemical system, smart clothes with wireless power transfer and sensing capabilities, wind-resistant concrete roof components, and many more.
- Through a wide range of programs and initiatives, the College of Business connects people, ideas and resources in ways that help boost existing businesses toward rapid growth and transform innovative concepts into thriving ventures.
